Итак, поговорим об обмане. Говорят, каждый человек говорит неправду несколько раз за сутки. Конечно, это включает в себя ""Oчень рад вас видеть!"" сказанное малознакомому коллеге при встрече. Существует множество исследований, пытавшихся обнаружить точный критерии лжи: бегающий взгляд, вспотевшие ладоны, заикающаяся речь... Мы возможно, коснемся этих и других критериев, так же как и способов обмануть Шерлока Холмса, Станиславского или даже детектор лжи. Но в основном я хотела бы коснуться вопроса, что именно побуждает человека лгать.
И конечно, не будем забывать о том, что люди гораздо чаще обманывают себя, чем других. По крайней мере так считал Бенжамин Франклин. А ведь самообман, по определению Джонатана Франзена это уютное теплое одеяло, которое всегда немного коротковато. Так зачем же нам нужно это одеяло? So, let's talk about deception. It is often said that every person tells several lies each day. Of course, that count includes harmless social niceties such as “So good to see you!” said to a colleague you barely know. Researchers have spent decades trying to identify reliable signs of lying: shifty eyes, sweaty palms, hesitant speech, and many others. We may touch on some of these indicators and discuss whether it is possible to fool Stanislavski, Sherlock Holmes or even a polygraph. But the main question of this class is: why do people lie in the first place? What drives us to distort the truth, conceal it, or create alternative versions of reality?
And, of course, we should not forget that people deceive themselves far more often than they deceive others—or so Benjamin Franklin claimed. Self-deception, as Jonathan Franzen wrote, is like a lovely warm blanket ... but it never quite covered everything. Why do we need such a blanket in the first place? That is one of the questions we will explore in this class.
