Life for water dwelling microbes and why it is the same as your life would be in honey, using dimensional analysis

In physics, especially physics that tries to explain biology, sometimes we have to deal with very complicated equations, and unlike mathematicians we don’t solve those equations but instead guesstimate the solution using basic algebra and things we know about the units of the terms in the equations. And surprisingly, this can answer a lot of cool questions, like the total time it takes for a pendulum to complete its cycle, how a spring moves, and what the difference is between biking through air and swimming through honey, and why a microbe will always feel like its swimming through honey. 

This class will start from one lecture on this methodology. And then we will use it to explore the world of water dwelling microbes which you will be able to see yourself through a microscope (like here: https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/post/transfer_133484). We will learn why they can’t swim the way you and I do, and how they swim instead and what all this has to do with mixing jam into honey (yes this is another deep cut from the play Arcadia), an analogy of which I will show you in an experiment!

В физике, особенно в физике которая старается обьяснить биологию, мы часто встречаемся с очень сложными не решаемыми выражениями, но в отличие от математиков, мы вместо того что-бы их решать придумали трюк, с помощью которого можно примерно решить задачу, почти ничего не считая `из соображений размерности'. Удивительным образом с помощью такого метода можно почти точно узнать решение у множества задач, начиная с того как долго будет качаться маятник или двигаться пружинка до того чем отличается твой путь на велосипеде от плавания в меду, и почему микробы, даже в воде, всегда ощущают себя как в меду. 

В этом классе мы начнем с одной лекции о том как пользоваться таким методом. А потом, мы используем его что бы узнать про мир микробов, на которых вы сможете посмотреть через микроскоп (как здесь: https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/post/transfer_133484), и убедится что они плавают не так как мы, а совсем по-другому. А по дороге мы узнаем какое это все отношение имеет к смешиванию варенья в йогурте (да это еще одна ссылка к Аркадии, извините :)), аналог которого я покажу в эксперименте!
